When I set out to meet Kerry Sellers, the woman behind Silkeri, a unique collection of silkwear tastefully hand-made in the Palace City of India, I anticipated garments of quality and delicacy. What I did not expect was to be enchanted by their simplicity, fine patterns in rich colors, and end up rediscovering art in Silk. According to ancient legend, China was the first civilization to discover and practice sericulture – breeding of silkworm for silk – and for nearly three millennia (yes, the dot.com era was still centuries away) they kept it as one of their best guarded secrets. Once considered the exclusive privilege of royalty, silk remains a wonder of nature. Clothes made from silk are not only beautiful, but also warm in cool weather and cool in hot weather – quite as marvelous as the silk worm itself. Interestingly, silk was used for musical instruments, fishing-lines, bowstrings and even paper. It’s these fascinating qualities of silk on which Silkeri has capitalized. When she launched Silkeri in November 2008, she was keen on providing women with quality products that are skin and eco-friendly. Interestingly, men are just as impressed as women! Quiet a few of my clients have been encouraged by their husbands to buy Silkeri outfits. I think the feminism appeals to both genders equally,” says Kerry, who is pleased with her growing clientele. Kerry has successfully promoted Silkeri wears at Bait Diva, American Women’s League, British Ladies Society, AUK and Kuwait Medical Association. She plans to expand her collection with more s and lengths to meet varied needs and dressing tastes. There’s no doubt that Silkeri’s versatility will appease most dressing styles. In December 2006 the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 2009 to be the International Year of Natural Fibres, so as to raise the profile of silk and other natural fibres. It appears Silkeri not only has the season’s fashion appeal, but is also promoting Silk as a natural fibre.
